Illumination Dance, Dance night at St Albans (normally on the 2nd Saturday of each month).
We have moved to the 29th of July due to a new option for the night.
We are running a 1hr workshop with the lovely Nina Daines, who is a well-known teacher with many years of dancing and teaching experience.

- We will explore different styles of music from lyrical to epic and discover how to adapt our dancing to reflect the different energies using,
amongst other ideas,
3. The discipline of coiled stillness and movement.
4. We will also look at the challenge of variable tempos and with the use of established dance techniques
5. Learn how to move smoothly from one speed to another.

Illumination Dance is a new concept for the St Albans area where we aim to play music which teases your inner dancer to come out.
You could be someone at any stage of your dancing that is no longer satisfied dancing with the mainstream music you hear regularly in modern jive.
You may be looking for something a little more chilled, lyrical or expressive, enabling you to dance more musically to what you hear.
You might want to fuse your modern jive with other styles, such as WCS, Tango, and Blues, letting you vary your mood throughout the evening.
You could even just be hoping to finish a dance and be able to say to your partner “wow I didn’t know I could dance like that”.
If any of these descriptions sound close then Illumination Dance is the place for you to come and dance. We welcome dancers that want to
explore musical expression and enjoy music that is always interesting and occasionally challenging. You’ll find dancers of all levels of experience and ability,
with the common aim that they enjoy dancing to good music.
Illumination Dance has found the best of locations and venues to cater to all tastes of dancers.
With the best DJ’s, Best sound and lighting systems, also with the best venues in the best locations, we believe we have a winning combination, for our dancers.
Illumination Dance brings a different concept in dance for currently in the St Albans & Cambridge areas with new venues coming to the group in 2021 with our Illumination (Light) Expressive Freestyle.
Our aim is to give our dancers a range of music, of a variety of genres and tempos, which teases out that more expressive dancer that is deep inside all of us.
You could be someone, at any stage of your dancing, that is no longer satisfied dancing with the mainstream music you hear regularly in modern jive freestyles.

The normal Door price for a freestyle in 2022 will be £12
Tickets booked in advance will remain at £10
An alternative option is, by putting on Facebook you are going to this event at least 5 days before the event date,
we will reduce the Door price to £11 in Lieu with your support.
Also, in 2023 we still prefer cash as the main method of payment but will be adding the facility for you to pay at the venue by credit/debit card.
However, cash will still be the preferred method of payment when this is implemented. Your help in this matter is appreciated.

Specialized training (Workshops) is on an intensive basis and normally runs for approximately 2 for a mini-workshop and 4 hours for a full workshop with breaks and some social time for dancing and teacher support,

Nina Daines
Nina Daines
Independent Teacher
Nina is an accredited teacher with qualifications from the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance (ISTD) and is currently a teacher of Modern Jive, Expressive dance, Lindy Hop and associated dances based in London. She has taught and performed professionally since she was 17 years old. She began with Ballet, Jazz and Contemporary – teaching and performing for 10 years – before developing connections with Jive and Lindy Hop. She also has extensive experience teaching in schools working with the likes of Chelsea Ballet Schools, and Queen’s College, where she ran the Dance Department for 8 years.
Nina’s reputation on the social dance scene began when she and her dance partner won a double first in the 1998 UK Champs; breaking the mould with the Cats choreographed routine and breathing new life into the freestyle category.
Nina continued to innovate in a number of ways. She and her partner brought Blues to the MJ scene and she ran the annual Swingin’ The Blues event in London for over 10 years. She and her partner were instrumental in establishing ‘musicality’ as a necessary ‘tool’ for the modern jiver, along with providing ground-breaking workshops that broadened the scope of MJ.
Along the way, Nina has danced in numerous TV shows, including BBC’s ‘Dancing Cheek to Cheek’ with Len Goodman, The Paul O’Grady Show and Blue Peter. She has performed in the West End and in front of royalty, runs the successful Beach Boogie dance camp for 13 years, performed with various Swing Bands, done competitive coaching, competition judging and generally bopped a lot!
