Special note: For the whole of January 2023. If you bring someone new to St Ives on Monday night who is new to DanceXcess or Illumination Dance you will get a free entry on the same night. it’s Illumination Dance’s new concept night, for our regular Mondays at The Corn Exchange in St Ives. Info on the night. Doors open at 7:30pm with dancing till 8:00pm, we will be having a 1 hr class looking at musical interpretation and integrating different dance styles into your dance. The class will normally be broken into 2 parts the first 20 mins will be looking at music and the different parts that make up the music and how to dance to various levels in the music. then the remainder of the hour will be looking at concepts of dance and utilizing different styles and interpretations of your dance. at 9:00pm we will be running our normal expressive freestyle till the end of the evening which ends at 10:45pm Illumination Dance brings a different concept to dance for St Ives, Nr Cambridge area with this freestyle class night held on Monday nights. We also run regular freestyles. St Albans & Cambridge areas with our Illumination (Light) Expressive Freestyle. Our aim is to give our dancers a range of music, of a variety of genres and tempos, which teases out that more expressive dancer that is deep inside all of us. • You could be someone, at any stage of your dancing, that is no longer satisfied dancing with the mainstream music you hear regularly in modern jive freestyles. • You might want to fuse your modern jive with other styles, such as WCS, Tango, and Blues, letting you vary your mood throughout the evening. • You may be looking for music that is a little more chilled, or perhaps more lyrical or expressive, giving you the backdrop to dance more ‘musically’ to what you hear. • You could even just be hoping to finish a dance and be able to say to your partner “wow I didn’t know I could dance like that”. Quote from “Elliot Manley” In conclusion “Modern Blues” music consists mainly of gentle ballads and Modern Blues dance is a body-led form that has evolved from slow modern jive # while “Expressive” music can be big and dramatic with strong changes of pace and dynamics and the dances that go with it vary between intimate hold with tiny, subtle movements and big gestures where the dancers connect at a distance. The key difference is that Expressive dances tell a story. But “modern blues”, “expressive” and other dance styles can be smoothly blended if both partners understand the dance styles. If any of these descriptions sound close to what you’ve thought to yourself or said to others, then Illumination Dance is the place for you and your friends to come and dance. At our events, you’ll find dancers of all levels of experience and ability, who share a common wish to express themselves by dancing to music that is always interesting and occasionally challenging. Please note that we want everyone to have fun in their dance, and dancers whose taste in music leans towards what you might find at a ‘regular’ MJ night, based on up-tempo music with a more metronomic beat, might not find what they are comfortable with at Illumination Dance freestyles. While we’d always love to see you at our events, we wouldn’t want to entice you along on false pretenses when there are a wide variety of franchised and independent operators already serving that customer base.
